What difference does it make?
The timeline leading up to Passover starts with 2 days before to two days after the Passover (13-17th of Nisan)
Hopefully what you will see below is the end of an honest attempt to study God’s word on a specific subject. This is not an allegory or story, it is a attempt to put together scripture and verse. Now we can get back to the fun stuff!!
2 days to 1 day before the Passover, Nisan-13,14/Tuesday (24 hours – Monday the 12th at sunset through Wednesday the 14th up to sunset, after sunset, started the 15th)
Matthew 26:2 sets the timeline telling us that after 2 days (after 48 hours and one minute, which became the 15th of Nisan) was the feast of the Passover. Jesus was betrayed (either at the last supper or the Garden when Judas kissed Jesus, which led to his arrest on the 14th) and then his crucifixion (also on the 14th before sunset). Mark 14:1 repeats the 2 days after, but doesn’t mention his betrayal or being crucified, and adds it was also the feast of unleavened bread
To summarize the events of these 2 days (the 13th and the 14th of Nisan)
1- After 48 hours and one minute was the feast of the Passover and the feast of unleavened bread became the 15th of Nisan after sunset
2- Jesus was still in Bethany at Simon’s house when he made this statement about the woman that anointed his body for burial (Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9)
3- The religious elite stated they couldn’t kill Jesus on the feast day, which started on the 15th of Nisan (Matthew 26:4, 5), so they had to kill him the after 12:00- 6:00 PM o the 14th
4- Judas goes to the religious elite, and agreed to betray Jesus (Matthew 26:14-16, Mark 14:10,11, Luke 22:3-6)
5- On the first day of the feast of the unleavened bread, the Passover meal is still future (Matthew 26:17, Mark 14:12-killed the Passover, Luke 22:7, John 13:1)
6- At this time Jesus sent Peter and John to prepare the Passover meal (Matthew 26:18, 19, Mark 14:13-16, Luke 22:8-13)
7- When the evening had come (changes from the 13th to the 14th when they were eating Jesus’s the last supper), which wasn’t the Passover meal, that was still future (Matthew 26:20, 21, Mark 14:17,18, Luke 22:14, 15, John 13:2)
8- Jesus was betrayed by Judas after dinner on the 14th of Nisan
9- But Jesus was not yet killed, which would be later that day before the start of the 15th of Nisan at sunset
10- Judas is identified as the one that would betray Jesus (Matthew 26:21-25, Mark 14:18-21, Luke 22:21-23, John 13:2, 11,21-30, 18:2)
11- Jesus initiated the communion of his body and his blood at his last meal(Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:17-20)
12- Jesus left with the 11 not 12 to the Mount of Olives, his betrayal and arrest, and the rest is History (Matthew 26:30,45-47, Mark 14:26-also called Gethsemane-14:42-46, Luke 22:39, John 14:31-they left the Passover meal, 18:1-was called a garden)
13- We have to conclude from the scriptures that we studied, that Jesus died and was buried on Wednesday (the 14th of Nisan) between 3:00 PM and 5:59 PM, before the 15th of Nisan beginning
Passover, Nisan-15/Thursday (24 hours – Wednesday the 14th after sunset through Thursday the 15th up to sunset. Jesus now dead 24 hours)First day of the feast of unleavened bread began, also was a high day
Day after Passover, Nisan-16/Friday (24 hours – Thursday the 15th at sunset through Friday, the 16th up to sunset. Jesus now dead 48 hours)
2 days after Passover, Nisan-17/Saturday (24 hours – Friday the 16th at sunset through Saturday, the 17th up to sunset. Jesus now dead 72 hours, He was raised prior to the start of Sunday which was after sunset started on the 18th of Nisan)
The understanding that we are dealing with 2 feasts and the day of the Passover is included in these two feasts is important to understand his day of death and his resurrection
Days of the unleavened bread (13th, our Tuesday through the 21st of Nisan, nine days total)
Exodus 12:15 – Seven days shall you eat unleavened bread; even the first day you shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eat leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel (1st day put the unleavened bread away, next 7 days, don’t eat unleavened bread, a total of 9 days)
- 12:1 – First month of the year
- 12:3-6 – 10th day of this month pick the animal for the Passover and kill it on the 14th in the evening, before the 15th
- 12:8 – Eat the meal that night, before the 15th
- 12:10 – If anything is left burn it in the morning of the 15th
- 12:11-13 – This meal is the Lord’s Passover and he will Passover that night and kill all the first born in the land of Egypt (on the 15th after the meal was eaten on the 14th)
- 12:14-19 – This is the feast that would be kept throughout the generations, what feast? This has to refer to the feast of Passover which is 7 days (15th-21st of Nisan) is not the 9 days of the feast of the unleavened bread(13th-21st of Nisan)
Matthew 26:17-19 – Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread (13th) the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, where will you that we prepare for thee to eat the Passover (on the 15th, the first day of the Feast of Passover)? And he said, go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master said, my time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at thy house with my disciples. And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them, and they made ready the Passover (1st day was also the day of preparation and was a high day)
Mark 14:12 – And the first day of unleavened bread (13th), when they killed the Passover, his disciples said unto him, where will thou that we go and prepare that thou may eat the Passover?
Luke 22:7, 8 – Then came the day of unleavened bread when the Passover must be killed (13th). And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the Passover, that we may eat
Feast of the Passover (Days of the feast of the Passover (15th through the 21st of Nisan, our Thursday). These are the last 7 days of the feast of unleavened bread, they overlap in time, and sometimes they are confused as the same feast
Matthew 26:2 – You know that after two days is the feast of the Passover (15th), and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified
Mark 14:1 – After two days was the feast of Passover(15th), and unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death (feast of Passover was also known as the feast of unleavened bread)
Luke 22:1 – Now the feast of unleavened bread (also called the feast of the Passover) drew near, which is called the Passover (15th)
Day of Passover (Passover meal eaten on the 15th of Nisan, our Thursday)
Mark 14:12 – And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the Passover, his disciples said unto him, where will thou that we go and prepare that thou may eat the Passover (15th)?
Mark 14:14 – And wheresoever he shall go in, say you to the goodman of the house, The Master said, Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples (15th) – Luke 22:11
Mark 14:16 – And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the Passover (15th) – Luke 22:13
Luke 22:1 – Now the feast of unleavened bread drew near, which is called the Passover (15th)
John 11:55- And the Jews’ Passover was nigh at hand (15th): and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves
John 12:1 – Then Jesus six days before the Passover (15th) came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead
John 13:1 – Now before the feast of the Passover (15th), when Jesus knew that his hour has come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end
John 18:28 – Then led they, Jesus, from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early (when was it early, what day?-14th); and they went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the Passover (15th after sunset)
John 18:39 – But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the Passover: will you therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
John 19:14 – And it was the preparation of the Passover (14th), and about the sixth hour: and he said unto the Jews, Behold your King! Jesus’s day of death was the 14th(our Wednesday) of Nisan, buried before sunset on Wednesday still the 14th of Nisan
