What difference does it make? Just the facts
Jesus’s death was on the 14th day of the first month of the Jewish calendar
(the 14th of Nisan), or the Hebrew calendar (the 14th of Abib), which corresponds to our April 29
The timeline leading up to Passover from 6 days through 3 days prior (Thursday sunset to Sunday, one minute before sunset)
1 – Jesus stayed at Lazarus’ house (6th day, Thursday sunset to Friday sunset)
2 – He rode into Jerusalem on an ass and a colt (Old Testament prophecy Zechariah 9:9) – (Matthew 21:2-7)
3 – He taught the people in the Temple (5 days through 3 days prior to the Passover, being Friday sunset to Sunday sunset)
4 – He returned to Bethany for the night (5th day, Friday)
5 – On the next 2 days he killed two fig trees, at different times along the trip to Jerusalem, one died immediately and the other overnight (4th and 3rd day, Saturday and Sunday)
6 – He taught in the Temple, which he did daily leading up to the Passover
6 days before Passover, Nisan-9/Friday (24 hours – Thursday the 8th at sunset through Friday the 9th to sunset)
John 12:1 – Jesus had dinner in Bethany at Lazarus’s home (6th day)
5 days before the Passover, Nisan-10/Saturday (24 hours – Friday the 9th at sunset through Saturday the 10th to sunset)
Matthew 21:1-9 – Jesus rode into Jerusalem (5th day), his disciples brought him an ass and a colt, doesn’t say which one he rode to Jerusalem
Entered Jerusalem, and went into the Temple (21:10-12)
He left and returned to Bethany for the night, which became 4th day at sunset (21:17)
Mark 11:1-9 – Jesus rode a colt into Jerusalem (5th day)
Entered Jerusalem and the Temple, looked around at all things (11:11)
Left the city and returned to Bethany (Mark 11:12), still on the 5th day before sunset
Luke 19:30-38 – Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a colt (5th day)
Entered the Temple and taught (Luke 19:45)
It doesn’t mention him leaving the Temple or where he spent the night
He taught daily in the Temple, referring to the 6 days prior to the Passover (19:47)
John 12:12-16 – On the next day (5th day) he rode into Jerusalem on a young ass (ass’s colt)
Probably entered the Temple and taught, because the people came to worship at the Feast in the Temple area (John 12:20)
Doesn’t mention him leaving the Temple or where he stayed the night (5th day)
The timeline for what Jesus did on the 6th and 5th days before the Passover
- He stayed at Lazarus’s house on the 6th day, which at sunset becomes the 5th day
- He left Bethany in the morning (5th day) and rode on an ass or a colt to Jerusalem
- Entered the Temple, did many things, mostly taught the people (5th day)
- He left and returned to Bethany for the night, which started after sunset the 4th day before the Passover
4 days before the Passover, Nisan-11/Sunday (24 hours – Saturday the 10th at sunset through Sunday the 11th up to sunset)
Matthew 21:18-23 – The next morning (4th) Jesus goes by the fig tree and killed it by talking to it, and it died immediately
Returns to the Temple and battles the enemies and teaches the people
He finally leaves the Temple (Matthew 21:23-24:1) but doesn’t say where he went
Mark 11:12 – On the morrow (4th) they pass a fig tree and Jesus curses because it had no figs, and didn’t die immediately (11:11:12-14)
He came to Jerusalem and went into the Temple, putting up with the crap of the religious elite
He went out of the city but doesn’t say where he went to spend the night (11:15-19)
Luke 20:1-21:37 -No mention of the fig tree in Luke
Jesus is in the Temple, in the day time he taught
At night he abode in the Mount of Olives (but doesn’t say which days)
John 12:17-50 – No mention of the fig tree in John
Doesn’t say he entered the Temple, but Luke 19:47 tells us he was in the Temple daily
The timeline for what Jesus did on the 4th day before the Passover
- At night he stayed at the Mount of Olives, but doesn’t say which days
- He left Bethany in the morning (4th day) and Jesus spoke to 2 fig trees and they died, one immediately and the other overnight
- Entered the Temple and taught the people (4th)
- He probably spent the night on the Mount of Olives, but not written
3 days before the Passover, Nisan-12/Monday (24 hours – Sunday the 11th at sunset through Monday the 12th up to sunset
Mark 11:20-26 – In the morning (3rd) they passed the fig that Jesus had cursed the day before. Peter said, Lord, the fig tree that you cursed is dead, referring to the second fig tree
They entered the Temple and were confronted again by the religious elite (Mark 11:27-12:44)
The records in Matthew, Luke, and John give no additional information that adds to the timeline
The timeline for what Jesus did on the 3rd day before the Passover
- Mark mentioned the next day from the 4th day to the 3rd day before the Passover, dealt with the fig tree dying overnight
- Entered Jerusalem and the Temple and was confronted by the religious elite (3rd day)
- Nothing is mentioned about leaving the Temple or where they spent the night
If you allow the word to speak this is all we know from the King James Version about the 3rd day before Passover
